Biography

My research interests span distributed systems, mobile computing and pervasive computing. As an experimental computer scientist, I design, implement, evaluate and deploy systems that represent disruptive technologies, expand our knowledge and have real-wold impact. See my bio for examples of past research and industry impact. Cloudlet-based mobile computing: Mobile computing has typically assumed a 2-level hierarchy: mobile device and cloud. I am exploring a new architecture for mobile computing that includes a third layer called a cloudlet. This layer is part of the fixed infrastructure but is located close to the mobile device (typically one Wi-Fi hop away) in order to ensure low end-to-end latency. A cloudlet enables a mobile device to offload compute-intensive and data-intensive processing within tight latency bounds. This avoids the long WAN latencies between a mobile device and a public cloud, thus enabling an entirely new class of highly interactive and resource-rich mobile applications. For example, a user with a lightweight body-worn computer could take advantage of a cognitive assistance application that executes sophisticated computer vision and language assistance algorithms at near real-time speeds. A cloudlet can be viewed as a "data center in a box". It is self-managing, requiring little more than power, Internet connectivity, and access control for setup. Virtual machine (VM) technology plays a central role cloudlet design and implementation. Deep non-text search: In the Diamond project I am exploring new search capabilities beyond what is possible through the classic "crawl, fetch and index" strategy of search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and Bing today. Specifically, I am exploring search strategies that perform information filtering at the edgest of the Internet using query-specific search computations. This is proving to be especially valuable for content search of data that has high dimensionality of feature spaces (such as images and video). It is also valuable when the data capture source is only weakly connected to the cloud, as might occur in a military context or when one is searching untagged images on smartphones. This research is centered on a storage architecture and open-source implementation called the OpenDiamond? platform, which embodies the concepts of result caching and self-tuning. This allows it to leverage work done in previous searches, and to dynamically adapt to different hardware configurations, workloads, and data content in a manner that is completely transparent to users and applications. A mechanism called scoping enables Diamond searches to span structured data sources (such as a relational database) as well as unstructured data (such as images). Modules called data retrievers enable searches over a wide range of data sources, including live data from webcams and dynamic content sources such as GigaPan. Layered on top of the OpenDiamond platform are a number of open-source applications that are customized for specific domains and data types. Medical and pharmaceutical applications of Diamond: The Diamond approach to search is proving to be especially valuable in medical applications that involve imaging. In collaboration with clinicians and researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Merck, and other institutions we are exploring Diamond applications to areas such as radiology, pathology, dermatology, craniofacial genetics, and drug discovery. These efforts may open the door to research and diagnostic strategies that were not considered feasible until now. VM-based mobility across space and time: In the Internet Suspend/Resume (ISR) project, I am exploring a hands-free approach to mobile computing that appears well suited to future pervasive computing environments in which commodity hardware may be widely deployed for transient use. The key insight of ISR is that demand-paged VM execution over the Internet can be made efficient enough to extend the suspend/resume metaphor of mobile hardware to situations where a user carries no hardware. In other words, one can logically suspend a machine at one Internet site, travel to some other site and then seamlessly resume work there on another machine. In the Olive project, we are collaborating with IBM and other partners to extend this capability to long-term archiving of executable content for digital libraries.
