Biography

Brandi Janssen conducts qualitative, ethnographic research examining production practices in alternative agriculture. Trained as an anthropologist, Dr. Janssen's recent work considers the complex social processes necessary to build robust local food networks. These include the labor associated with rural food production and processing; the challenges producers face when supplying institutional markets for local food; and the complex relationships between small-scale producers and their larger-scaled conventional neighbors. In addition, she is interested in the ways that culture, policy, and socio-economic structures contribute to environmental and social vulnerabilities among farm operators, farm workers, and rural residents. As director of Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH), she oversees the work of a statewide coalition of public and private organizations devoted to reducing injuries and fatalities on Iowa farms.
