Biography

Dr. Hongbo Zhang is the director of smart sensing and automation Lab. He has a sustained research track record in automation and smart sensing with 55 publications. He has won award (95,000\$) from specialty crop block program of USDA for building low-cost robotics for automation of raspberry irrigation tasks. He has also successfully built two self-driving golf carts from scratch based on the intelligent autonomous vehicle award from Marshal Foundation (75,000\$). He is also an active in review of publications and proposals. He has reviewed over 180 Journal publications for various automation and optical sensing Journals. He is also the panelist for reviewing eleven proposals for NASA Development and Advancement of Lunar Instrumentation Step-2 program in 2021. He has contributed numerous community services and co-found the Lexington Makers Space in Virginia. He has developed a new single camera based autonomous navigation method to greatly save the cost for building the autonomous robotics platform. He is also active in building different autonomous industrial applications and applied those into his teaching to benefit students. His recent publications make use of simple and inexpensive optical setup able to achieve a large improvement of object recognition accuracy. He has also developed new scheme of laser with minimum amount of noises thus the improved energy utilization efficiency for various laser related applications. His work has advanced the development of new optical sensors for more accurate sensing and smart vision research fields. He has also successfully managed research projects. At Central State University, he is the program director of Mechatronics program. He has managed 827,425\$ annual budget with four full time researchers. He has been supervising the USDA 1890 Evans-Allen capacity grant at Central State University. He has also participated the USDA supported autonomous integrated weed management project at Central State University. At Virginia Military Institute, he has worked on precision agriculture using drones and achieved autonomous soybean identification and segmentation.
