**About the American Academy of Neurology**
The American Academy of Neurology is the leading voice in brain health. As the world’s largest association of neurologists and neuroscience professionals with more than 40,000 members, the AAN offers access to continuing education, essential practice tools, research grants, networking and advocacy opportunities, and more. Through public resources like *Brain & Life*®, we make it easy for patients, caregivers, and anyone interested in brain health to access the latest information and guidance. Together with our members, the AAN is advancing what’s possible in brain disease treatment, cures, and prevention. It’s all in service of our mission to enhance member’s career fulfillment and promote brain health for all.
**Vision**
To be indispensable to our members.
**Mission**
To enhance member career fulfillment and promote brain health for all.
**AAN values**
- Community: We are a vibrant community, united by our unwavering dedication to realizing our mission.
- Leadership: We lead in service to others, inspiring collaboration and driving change.
- Well-being: We invest in opportunities to inspire, invigorate, and thrive.
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion: We value the diversity of our identities and experiences and strive to advance equity and inclusion.
**AAN goals**
The strategic plan includes the following four goals and objectives.
**Grow a diverse neurology workforce**
The AAN will promote optimum health care to people with neurological disease and grow the number of neurology clinicians as well as practitioners underrepresented in neurology. We will also continue to expand the care team by providing support for advanced practice providers trained in neurology and partnering with primary care providers and other members of the care team. The AAN supports the entire neurologist-led care team to provide patients with the highest quality care and neurological health.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
- Increasing number of practicing neurologists
- Increasing number of US neurologist members who are underrepresented in neurology (UIN)
- Increasing international membership
- Increasing non-neurologist membership
**Strengthen neurological practice**
The AAN will strengthen the viability of neurological practice by improving patient access and adherence to care, improving member career fulfillment, reducing administrative burden, and ensuring that neurologists are fairly valued in the health care environment. Neurologists will serve as leaders of the care team to ensure that we improve the care and brain health of our patients. The AAN will ensure neurologists have access to the right resources to serve their patients and continue to promote the value of the neurologist-led care team.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
- Increasing neurologist compensation
- Reducing administrative burdens
- Decreasing burnout
- Increasing access to neurological care
- Increasing member use of quality resources
**Promote neuroscience research**
The AAN will strengthen support for neuroscience research across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and population implementation science. The AAN will support research and researchers as the keys to better diagnosis, life-saving therapies and treatments, cures, and the elimination of health care disparities, as well as a future free of brain disease for all.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
- Increasing NIH funding
- Increasing AAN research awards
- Increasing the number of practices participating in clinical trials
- Expanding UIN member involvement in AAN research programs
**Improve neurological health**
The AAN will provide leadership, convene experts, and guide collaborations in identifying strategies for preventing, slowing, and eliminating neurological disease. The AAN will work to improve overall neurological health and quality of life for all people through unparalleled lifelong education, quality improvement, scientific discovery, effective therapies, and optimizing brain health.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
- Increasing public engagement in AAN advocacy
- Increasing member engagement in AAN advocacy
- Developing validated brain health resources
- Establishing the AAN as leading source for brain health resources
