WHO WE ARE Founded in 1948, ASJA (the American Society of Journalists and Authors) is the nation’s largest professional organization of independent nonfiction writers. Our members are outstanding nonfiction freelance writers who meet ASJA’s exacting standards of professional achievement. ASJA serves the entire freelance and publishing communities, through a variety of programs and initiatives. MISSION To be the voice and career resource for independent, entrepreneurial professional nonfiction writers For all freelance writers ASJA is the primary voice representing freelance writers’ interests, providing advocacy for our right to control and profit from our work as entrepreneurs. For ASJA Members ASJA offers professional development benefits and services, so that members can explore professional issues and concerns with our peers. For editors, agents, publishers, and clients ASJA members are professional, proven freelance nonfiction writers in a variety of fields, genres, and settings. For the publishing community ASJA leads the industry in establishing professional and ethical standards for freelance writers.
