Description
The APA Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) has the primary responsibility for recommending policy regarding APA educational and training affairs to the APA [Board of Directors](https://www.apa.org/about/governance/board "index") and [Council of Representatives](https://www.apa.org/about/governance/council "index").
**Mission and purpose**
- Recommend policy regarding APA educational and training affairs
- Recommend to the Board of Directors and Council of Representatives changes to their programs and operational priorities which would allow APA to take a national leadership role in the educational arena.
- Serve a consultative and advisory role with respect to ongoing planning and operations of the Education Directorate, in consultation with its executive director.
- Ensure the importance of and commitment to diversity in education and training in all its activities and initiatives.
**Membership**
- BEA consists of 13 members of the association and may include up to five external participants. External participants are appointed to provide BEA with the benefit of expertise in a variety of areas that may not exist within the BEA membership in a given year.
- Members serve for staggered three-year terms; external participants are appointed to serve for one year but may be reappointed for up to three years.
- Three BEA members are nominated by the appropriate governance group of the [Practice](https://www.apa.org/practice), [Public Interest](https://www.apa.org/pi "index"), and [Science](https://www.apa.org/science/directorate) directorates.
BEA typically meets in person once a year in the spring and meets via Zoom videoconference throughout the year. Discussions over email take place in between meetings.
