**About Us** Since 1987, we have awarded more than $462 million to fund more than 6,700 grants to more than 5,600 scientists around the world. **Our Mission** **The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is committed to alleviating the suffering caused by mental illness by [awarding grants](https://bbrfoundation.org/grants-prizes/grants) that will lead to advances and breakthroughs in scientific research.** **What We Fund** - Our model encourages new and innovative research in that we are able to support new ideas from bottom up generated by scientists. - Examples include the early support for [optogenetics](https://bbrfoundation.org/content/2005-breakthrough-decoding-brain-circuitry-and-how-it-links-behavior), [deep brain stimulation](https://bbrfoundation.org/content/2003-breakthrough-dbs-pacemaker-brain-treat-depression) for treatment-resistant depression, [transcranial magnetic stimulation](https://bbrfoundation.org/content/2000-breakthrough-treatment-resistant-depression), and [rapid-acting antidepressants](https://bbrfoundation.org/content/2006-breakthrough-rapid-acting-antidepressant-heralded-biggest-breakthrough-depression). - Each of these important breakthroughs received initial key support from grants provided by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. - 100% of every dollar [donated](https://bbrfoundation.org/donate) for research is invested in our research grants. Our operating expenses are covered by separate foundation grants. **How We Do It** The Foundation funds the most innovative ideas in neuroscience and psychiatry to better understand the causes and develop new ways to treat brain and behavior disorders.
