Description
The Centre de recherches mathématiques The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) is one of the most well-known mathematical sciences research institutes in the world. Founded in 1968 at the Université de Montréal, with research excellence at the center of its mission since its inception, the CRM brings together the mathematical strengths of Quebec and other Canadian universities and runs programs involving mathematicians from all over the world. The CRM has a unique dual structure reflected in a competitive, international based, scientific programming alongside the research and training activities of thirteen high-performance research laboratories regrouping most research mathematicians in Quebec. The institute has more than 250 regular members, most of them faculty in Quebec universities, and welcomes in its laboratories each year more than 80 postdoctoral fellows and a large number of visiting researchers. In addition, the CRM’s thematic programs, summer schools and other scientific meetings attract more than 2000 participants per year to the institute. The activities of the CRM and its 13 laboratories play an important role in the training of young researchers and, as a privileged place for high-level scientific meetings, the CRM makes a major contribution to the advancement of international research collaborations in mathematical sciences. Activities and programs The scientific activities of the CRM have two main components: the research projects undertaken by its teams and the thematic activities organized at the national and international levels. The CRM supports the next generation of researchers through several postdoctoral fellowship programs established with local partners (such as the Institut de Sciences Mathématiques, the Université Laval, the University of Ottawa) and with international partners (such as the Simons Foundation). In support of the advancement of mathematical knowledge and learning, the CRM organizes numerous outreach activities open to the general public as well as specific initiatives to support the development of numeracy. The institute supports equity and diversity in mathematical sciences across all its programs and through specific activities. Funding and institutional collaborators The CRM is mainly funded by NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), FRQ (Fonds de recherche du Québec), the Simons Foundation, the Quebec Ministry of Finance, and the NSF (National Science Foundation). The CRM receives strong support from its host institution, Université de Montréal, and its partner universities: Concordia University, Université Laval, McGill University, Université du Québec à Montréal and Université de Sherbrooke. In addition, endowment funds have been established thanks to the generosity of André Aisenstadt, Robert Langlands, Serge Bissonnette and Jacques Courtois. The institute has strong partnerships with the other Canadian institutes (AARMS, Fields, PIMS, CANSSI), and with many international centers such as the CNRS, through an International Research Laboratory, with SLMath, as well as with FIM-Zürich, CRM-Barcelone, CIRM and others.
