**Who We Are** **In the service of health** The USPHS Commissioned Corps is one of the nation’s uniformed services — a branch committed to the service of health. Officers advance our nation’s public health, serving in agencies across the government, as physicians, nurses, dentists, veterinarians, scientists, engineers and other professionals. **Leadership** We provide vision and purpose in public health through inspiration, dedication, and loyalty. **Service** We are committed to public health through compassionate actions and stewardship of time, resources, and talents. **Integrity** We exemplify uncompromising ethical conduct and maintain the highest standards of responsibility and accountability. **Excellence** We exhibit superior performance and continuous improvement in knowledge and expertise. **Our History** For more than 200 years, men and women have served on the front lines of our nation’s public health in what is today called the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. Originally created to protect the health of sailors and immigrants in the late 1700s, the USPHS Commissioned Corps' role in healthcare delivery, research, regulation, and disaster relief became critical over time. Thanks to our legacy of service across multiple agencies and around the globe, we are now the largest public health program in the world.
