Description
At the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York, change is in our DNA. That comes of being born in 2006, as the digital revolution was transforming our profession in ways none of us could have imagined.
We fashioned a school to teach the latest storytelling, entrepreneurial, and technological skills alongside reporting, writing, and ethics. Beyond that, we’ve crafted a culture that spurns complacency, that isn’t afraid to pivot before the ground under us shifts.
Our mission is to serve the public interest – by training new journalists from varied economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds who will bring much-needed diversity to newsrooms, by helping mid-career journalists retool their skills, and by partnering with other media organizations to find new paths to excellence.
Our [low tuition rates](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/future-students/tuition-and-fees/), along with the added backing of [private donors](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/give-to-the-j-school/cuny-graduate-school-journalism-foundation#major-donors), allow candidates for our master’s degrees in [journalism](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/m-a-in-journalism/) and [engagement journalism](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/future-students/m-a-engagement-journalism/) to receive a world-class education at an affordable price. We also offer a unique [bilingual master’s in journalism](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/future-students/m-a-in-journalism/subject-concentrations/spanish-language-journalism/) for students fluent in English and Spanish.
Our three [media centers](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/centers/) provide research, training, thought leadership, industry meet-ups, and financial support for quality journalistic work.
We also offer a robust [professional education program](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/j-plus/) through regular evening and weekend workshops. And we support in-depth reporting projects of professional journalists through [fellowship grants](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/about-us/fellowships/).
Classes are led by accomplished [full-time faculty and adjuncts](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/faculty-staff-directory/), who tap their networks to help students and graduates find internships, freelance opportunities and — the ultimate prize — [jobs](https://www.journalism.cuny.edu/current-students/career-services/where-our-alumni-are-working/).
At a time when our profession is reeling from financial pressures and lack of trust, the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is committed to producing the next generation of skilled, ethically minded, and diverse journalists.
We invite you to be part of our world.
**Mission Statement**
**TRANSFORMING JOURNALISM, ONE JOURNALIST AT A TIME**
The mission of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY is to prepare outstanding journalists to make a difference as they transform journalism.
We serve our profession, our city and the cause of global democracy by training truth-seeking future journalism leaders propelled by curiosity and courage.
Working across a spectrum of identities, cultures, languages and storytelling media, our students and faculty are united by a dedication to news reporting rooted in the eternal verities of fairness, accuracy and equity.
We train reporters to listen to and collaborate with communities. We also train them to generate clear and compelling work that offers information and insight, holds the powerful to account and drives civic conversation in New York and far beyond.
Amid transformative times, our reporters emerge from the J-School with the versatility and spirit of innovation needed to forge a path forward, fueled by our evolving digital DNA.
We draw our inspiration from our tight-knit community at a great public university grounded in high quality, affordability and economic mobility. And we draw our strength from our diversity as we strive to reflect the city and world we’re covering.
We share a commitment to building trust through human-centered, fact-driven reporting that gets action and connects people to the news they need to make decisions.
Our highly skilled journalists are preparing to make an impact and bring the practices of inclusive teamwork, mentorship and antiracism to every newsroom they enter.
Our alumni stand proud as guardians and carriers of a critical public trust: a free and independent press that helps people understand and navigate a complicated world. We see journalism as a calling, service and power to be wielded responsibly, ethically and with transparency — by all, for all.
The crucial quest to advance hard-hitting, equitable and sustainable journalism to help foster a just and civil society demands no less.
