Description
**Our Mission** **The DeVos Institute of Arts and Nonprofit Management trains, supports, and empowers managers and their boards to create positive, lasting change in communities worldwide.** **Our History** **The DeVos Institute of Arts and Nonprofit Management is a global leader in training, consulting, and implementation support for arts, culture, education, and humanities institutions worldwide.** Founded in 2001 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by Chairman Michael M. Kaiser, the DeVos Institute of Arts and Nonprofit Management provides training, consultancy, and implementation support for arts, culture, education, humanities, and social service institutions worldwide. In twenty-five years, the Institute has advised over 3,000 organizations in nearly 90 countries on six continents in the development and implementation of strategic plans, capital campaigns, new institution development, board governance, mergers and joint ventures, and executive transition. In addition to its consulting services, the DeVos Institute has partnered with the governments of several dozen nations abroad, and dozens of philanthropies in the United States to provide executive-level training for arts and nonprofit administrators. Since 2001, it has offered a Global Arts Management Fellowship, which boasts nearly 300 alumni on six continents, many of whom operate leading cultural and educational institutions in the public and private sectors. In 2010, while in residence at the Kennedy Center, the Institute received an unrestricted, in perpetuity, annual commitment from the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation to support its pro bono consulting and training activities, including the Global Arts Management Fellowship. From 2014 to 2024, the Institute partnered with the University of Maryland to deepen its research and training services. Today, it maintains offices in Washington, D.C., as an independent entity providing services on a global scale. A trusted partner to governments and leading philanthropies, the DeVos Institute delivers long-term, intensive capacity-building initiatives that strengthen organizations and entire cultural ecosystems. Our work has supported thousands of organizations in more than 30 U.S. cities and over a dozen countries worldwide. We have partnered with major funders including the Ford Foundation—leading a multi-year national initiative to help 27 organizations build right-sized, sustainable, and equitable infrastructure aligned with their creative ambitions—as well as the American Express Foundation, Bank of America, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, and the Murdock Trust. Government partners include national arts and funding agencies in England, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Vietnam, Norway, Croatia, Trinidad and Tobago, Oman, Taiwan, the United States, and the U.S. Department of State. In partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the DeVos Institute has led what is widely recognized as the most comprehensive capacity-building initiative in U.S. history. Since 2009, this partnership has supported more than 700 organizations across 19 American cities and six countries, forging deep collaborations among foundations, governments, cultural organizations, and communities to build lasting, sector-wide resilience. Through this work, the Institute has developed deep expertise across the cultural and nonprofit landscape, serving performing and presenting organizations, museums, galleries, art schools, libraries, universities, public media organizations, public art trusts, and nonprofit filmmaking institutions.
