Description
**About ICRH**
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) is dedicated to advancing research that addresses some of the most pressing health challenges in Canada. Conditions within our mandate, such as sepsis, stroke, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, are among the leading causes of death in Canada. Together, these conditions place a significant burden on the healthcare system, driving some of the highest acute care costs and contributing to hospital admissions that could be prevented or avoided. Through strategic funding opportunities, partnerships, capacity-building and knowledge mobilization initiatives, CIHR-ICRH supports research activities focused on reducing this burden and improving health outcomes, guided by priorities defined in our [2024-2034 Institute Research Priority Plan](https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/52931.html) and aligned with [CIHR’s vision for a healthier future](https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/52331.html).
**Who we are**
The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) is one of the thirteen specialized [institutes](https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/7155.html) that constitute the [Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)](https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/193.html). Focused on circulatory and respiratory health, ICRH supports a wide range of research, from fundamental biology to health systems and population health and act as a national hub, connecting researchers, policymakers, and patient groups to collaborate on priority health issues across the country.
**What we do**
ICRH’s mandate is to support research in a broad range of conditions associated with the heart, lungs, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical care, and sleep. To ensure that our new priorities and upcoming funding opportunities reflect the needs of researchers across the community, our activities are informed by national consultations and grounded in ICRH’s mandate.
Through collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches that consider the full continuum of care, from pre-acute, through acute and post-acute, ICRH strives to accelerate research findings toward real-world implementation, enhancing impact on health outcomes.
