Laurel Foundation Laurel Foundation was established by Cordelia S. May to enhance the vitality of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania. Today, the Foundation continues its mission by working closely with local nonprofits to promote the arts, protect the region’s natural areas, and provide educational opportunities. Our Purpose Laurel Foundation engages with nonprofit partners to support the public spaces, cultural assets, and workforce initiatives that enhance the lives of those who visit, reside, work, and study in Southwestern Pennsylvania. History Laurel Foundation was founded in 1951 by Cordelia S. May. At that time, Pittsburgh was in the initial stages of reinventing itself after an era of heavy industrialization and manufacturing. Private and city leaders launched the area’s first “Renaissance” as they began to address environmental, community, and infrastructure issues that required a new way of thinking. Laurel Foundation’s formation coincided with these efforts to bring awareness and support to Southwestern Pennsylvania. Splitting time between the picturesque Ligonier Valley and Pittsburgh, Mrs. May developed a strong affection for the people and places of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The area’s environmental treasures motivated much of her giving. The state’s breathtaking official flower, Mountain Laurel, inspired the naming of the Foundation. Her passion for the environment and people within the region influenced the Foundation’s approach to improving the quality of life across the region. Mrs. May served as Chairman of Laurel Foundation until her passing in 2005. Her legacy of giving continues to this day through the work and dedication of the people she inspired.
