**About the National Vaccine Program** The National Vaccine Program is part of the [Office of Infectious Disease Policy and HIV/AIDS (OIDP)](http://hhs.gov/oidp/index.html), which is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The National Vaccine Program and [National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC)](http://hhs.gov/vaccines/nvac/index.html) were established in 1986 to comply with [Section 2105 of the Public Health Service Act - PDF](http://hhs.gov/sites/default/files/nvpo/about/legislation.pdf). Responsibilities of the National Vaccine Program include: - Vaccine research - Vaccine development - Safety and efficacy testing of vaccines - Licensing of vaccine manufacturers - Production and procurement of vaccines - Distribution and use of vaccines - Necessity and effectiveness of vaccines - Adverse events related to vaccines and immunization activities These responsibilities are reflected in the [Vaccines National Strategic Plan](https://www.hhs.gov/vaccines/vaccines-national-strategic-plan/index.html), which provides a framework, including goals, objectives, and strategies, to serve as a roadmap in the coordination of vaccine development and use in the United States.
