Description
The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) manages, promotes, and enhances the things people love about North Carolina—its diverse arts and culture, rich history, libraries, and spectacular natural areas. Through its programs, the Department enriches education, stimulates economic development, improves public health, expands accessibility, and strengthens community resiliency. DNCR manages more than 100 locations across the state, including historic sites, museums, state parks, trails, aquariums, the N.C. Zoo, the State Library, the State Archives, the N.C. Arts Council, and heritage commissions. These programs and places unite North Carolinians, create a shared identity, and provide common ground. From 2025–2029, DNCR will complete major projects and initiatives to enhance the visitor experience and tell the story of North Carolina, including a new Asia Exhibit at the N.C. Zoo, expansion at Fort Fisher Aquarium, a full renovation of the Museum of History, new visitor centers at historic sites, and statewide commemoration of America’s 250th Anniversary. **Agency Mission Statement** We enrich people’s lives through education and stewardship of North Carolina’s natural and cultural resources. **Agency Vision Statement** Our vision is to leverage the state’s natural and cultural resources to build the social, cultural, educational, and economic future of North Carolina. **Agency Values** - **Joy**: We bring joy into our work to help us best serve the public. - **Creativity**: We invite innovation, inquiry, and new ideas. - **Stewardship**: We protect and share North Carolina’s history, culture, art, science, land, water, and wildlife for current and future generations. - **Authenticity**: We use evidence-based methods and strive to be a trusted source of information. - **Professionalism**: We are committed to a respectful workplace and excellent customer service. - **Collaboration**: We work across DNCR, state government, and with partners to achieve our mission.
