Description
**About Public Safety Canada**
Public Safety Canada was created in 2003 to ensure coordination across all federal departments and agencies responsible for national security and the safety of Canadians.
**Our mandate** is to keep Canadians safe from a range of risks such as natural disasters, crime and terrorism.
**Our mission** is to build a safe and resilient Canada.
**Our vision** is to, through outstanding leadership, achieve a safe and secure Canada and strong and resilient communities.
Legislation governing the Department sets out three essential roles:
1. support the Minister's responsibility for all matters related to public safety and emergency management not assigned to another federal organization;
2. exercise leadership at the national level for national security and emergency preparedness; and
3. support the Minister's responsibility for the coordination of entities within the Public Safety Portfolio.
Public Safety Canada works with five agencies and three review bodies, united in a single portfolio.
We also work with other levels of government, first responders, community groups, the private sector and other nations, on [national security](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/ntnl-scrt/index-en.aspx), [border strategies](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/brdr-strtgs/index-en.aspx), [countering crime](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/cntrng-crm/index-en.aspx) and [emergency management](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/mrgnc-mngmnt/index-en.aspx) issues and other safety and security initiatives.
This ensures that the government approach to Canada's safety is highly organized and prepared to confront threats to national security. Public Safety Canada coordinates an integrated approach to emergency management, law enforcement, corrections, crime prevention and border security.
Public Safety Canada has [regional offices](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/bt/rgnl-ffcs-en.aspx) across the country located in all provinces and in the North. They are organized into five regions: Atlantic, Quebec and Nunavut, Ontario, Prairies and Northwest Territories, and British Columbia and Yukon.
The Public Safety Canada [*Departmental Code of Conduct*](https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/bt/cd-cndct-en.aspx) provides guiding principles for ethical behaviour and decision making for Public Safety employees. All employees are required to adhere to the Code as a term and condition of employment.
