Description
The [National Institutes of Health](https://www.nigms.nih.gov/capacity-building/division-for-research-capacity-building/institutional-development-award-%28idea%29) (NIH) established the Institutional Development Awards (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program with the goal of increasing research capacity in certain states by stimulating partnerships between research-intensive and primarily undergraduate institutions (PUI). IDeA programs promote research competitiveness by funding basic, clinical and translational research. In addition, INBREs support workforce development by providing biomedical research and data science training opportunities for undergraduate students.
SC INBRE is achieving that goal by supporting the career development of faculty and hands-on research training of students at our network institutions through annual workshops for faculty and students focusing on career development, mentoring and other relevant topics, as well as [funding opportunities](https://sites.google.com/view/scinbre/funding) available to any faculty and students at SC INBRE’s network institutions.
SC INBRE was awarded $18.9 million for its fourth five-year renewable cycle began on September 1, 2020. Cycle IV includes a statewide network of 14 member institutions, two outreach institutions and two alumni institutions. Member and outreach/alumni institutions incorporate South Carolina’s three Comprehensive Research Universities and 15 of the state’s PUIs, including three Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
SC INBRE is administered at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia.
\*On September 1, 2025, SC INBRE received an administrative supplement from the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), extending Cycle IV for a sixth year of funding and adding two new PUIs to the network: Lander University and USC Beaufort.
