Description
The Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP), are all-volunteer non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting science awareness and science education locally, nationally and internationally. Our membership area included Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Maryland and Delaware. To that end, with proceeds from Pittcon, and the Pittsburgh Conference, we support member education programs, teacher and student awards, a wide variety of educational programs, and grant programs for high schools, colleges, and beginning university professors. SACP The Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP), was organized 1942 to advance analytical chemistry through science education. Its first Analytical Symposium was held on February 6, 1946, and interest and participation took off and grew heartily over the following decades. In 1949, the first exposition of Modern Laboratory Equipment was held in conjunction with the symposium. Since 1950, the SACP has co-sponsored Pittcon, the world’s largest annual conference and exposition on laboratory science, along with her sister society – the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP). The SACP currently has over 400 members in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The SACP is dedicated to the education of our membership, of the community and of future scientists from kindergarten through college. By educating children and the community, a new generation is being prepared to meet the future. Continuing Education helps to keep members current with new technologies, instrumentation and methods. The society provides awards, scholarships and grants that impact teachers and students locally, nationally and internationally. SSP The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) is a philanthropic, educational organization dedicated to enriching the study and practice of spectroscopy. We thrive thanks to our vibrant and enthusiastic volunteers. Since 1946, the SSP’s aim has been to promote scientific endeavors among spectroscopists at all professional levels. This is achieved through meetings, educational lectures and courses, mentorships, and access to a collaborative network of member-scientists. Volunteers chosen from the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, together with our sister organization, the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP), organize the annual Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, better known transnationally as Pittcon. It is from this annual conference and exposition that the SSP raises funds for its philanthropic efforts. Through Pittcon, the SSP and SACP donate approximately one million dollars each year to support various science outreach activities, including scholarships and internships, educator and scientific achievement awards, member and community educational programming, equipment grants, research grants, and grants to public science centers, libraries, and museums. It’s simply a matter of interacting.
