Description
About the Bioenergy Technologies Office The Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) within the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy supports research, development, and demonstration of technologies aimed to enable the use of domestic biomass and waste resources for the production of biofuels and bioproducts. BETO’s overall priorities are designed to: - Advance biofuel technologies for aviation, marine, off-road, and rail - Develop renewable chemicals and materials - Support utilization of diverse carbon resources in existing ethanol and petroleum infrastructure - Reduce costs of conversion pathways and feedstocks - Build demonstration-scale biorefineries to reduce risk and verify readiness for industry hand-offs - Establish regional resource hubs to support energy crop production Meeting these priorities requires significant and rapid advances in technology development and innovation across the entire biomass-to-bioenergy supply chain. Building a Low-Carbon U.S. Bioeconomy BETO supports the research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of technologies that mobilize renewable carbon resources across the U.S. economy. Including a variety of biomass and wastes, renewable carbon resources can be converted into high-performance biofuels as well as renewable chemicals and materials while lowering emissions. Download BETO’s Fact Sheet on Building a Low-Carbon U.S. Bioeconomy. BETO's Strategic Approach BETO funds work in collaboration with industry, academia, and DOE national laboratories to develop advanced technologies and innovative solutions to reduce the costs of biofuels. The R&D supported by BETO and its partners is creating cutting-edge technologies used in the processing of biomass and waste, from harvesting and preprocessing to conversion. BETO is focused on technologies to efficiently convert organic materials and biomass into affordable biofuels and bioproducts. These bioenergy technologies will help lower emissions in the transportation sector while improving our energy security, reliability, and resilience.
