Description
**About UK Research and Innovation**
Launched in April 2018, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
From cancer therapies to clean energy and from art conservation to astronomy, a rich history of research and innovation has transformed our lives for the better.
Today’s challenges are increasingly global and complex, needing diverse people and teams to understand and build the next generation of solutions and drive an innovation-led economy.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has placed five important themes at the heart of our five-year strategy:
- build a green future
- build a secure and resilient world
- create opportunities and improve outcomes in communities across the country
- secure better health, ageing and wellbeing for everyone
- tackle infections
By working towards shared goals, we can make life better for people, families, businesses and communities across the UK, improving lives, creating jobs and driving growth.
**New work under our strategic themes**
UKRI is supporting an ambitious set of programmes that include new interdisciplinary activity to amplify and connect existing UKRI investments relating to each theme.
This additional investment spans six years from 2023 to 2029, with an initial commitment of up to £185 million from 2023 to 2025.
Co-investment from our councils’ core budgets, and other funding partners such as government departments and international funding agencies, are raising our overall investment yet further.
This will make the strategic themes one of our largest and most exciting investment approaches, spanning the whole of our activity, at scale and over time.
**What we do**
Learn about the work we’re doing to build a world-class research system. We provide investment and support for researchers and businesses.

We enable collaboration and engagement across and beyond our communities, involving the wider public.
We improve the capabilities across the research system, within the UK and internationally, [developing world-class infrastructure](https://www.ukri.org/what-we-do/creating-world-class-research-and-innovation-infrastructure/) and [supporting an inclusive and ethical research culture](https://www.ukri.org/what-we-do/supporting-healthy-research-and-innovation-culture/).
