Description
The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi is one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions in the world, a reflection of the importance the United States places on its relationship with India. The Embassy represents 17 U.S. federal government agencies, from the U.S. Department of State to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Embassy coordinates the activities of four consulates — in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad – ensuring that the U.S.-India relationship is strong throughout the country. The American Center is the Embassy’s cultural center, offering art exhibits, book launches and musical programs. Located at 24 Kasturba Gandhi Marg in Connaught Place, New Delhi, it houses the American Library which is a public library open Monday through Saturday. The United States was the first country to exchange ambassadors with independent India in 1947. For more on this history of U.S.-India diplomatic relations, see 60 Years of U.S.-India Friendship in SPAN. Today, the U.S.-India bilateral relationship is based on five pillars: strategic cooperation; energy and climate change; education and development; economics, trade and agriculture; science and technology, health and innovation. The current chancery in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, was designed by architect Edward D. Stone and opened in 1959. Read more about the history of the chancery here. The Ambassador’s residence, located next to the chancery, is called Roosevelt House. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in India maintain an air quality monitoring program with on-site measuring instruments. The U.S. Embassy’s air pollution monitor covers the area of Chanakyapuri and measures PM 2.5 particulates on the Embassy compound.
