Description
January 27 marked 200 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Argentina. The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a ceremonial event with the United States Ambassador to Argentina, Marc R. Stanley, to celebrate two hundred years of friendship and cooperation. Ambassador Stanley said: “I am very excited that this year the United States and Argentina celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations. We appreciate the fruits of our long and mutually beneficial friendship, and see even more opportunities on the horizon. As the world continues to face food and energy shortages, Argentina and the United States have a great opportunity to work together to help feed and fuel the world. The United States is committed to strengthening our friendship and cooperation as we continue to work together to increase trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties between our two countries in the future.” On January 27, 1823, Argentina and the United States officially established diplomatic relations when President James Monroe appointed Caesar Rodney of Delaware as Minister Plenipotentiary to the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. The bilateral relationship is based on deep shared values, including a strong commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The United States and Argentina seek to promote just and equitable economic prosperity, save the planet from the effects of climate change, guarantee citizen security and peace in the Western Hemisphere, and promote the advancement of humanity through science, technology, and education. Both countries also share strong interpersonal ties that have helped build the last two hundred years of friendship and will continue to grow for centuries to come.
