History Founded in 1968, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts was born from philanthropist Catherine Filene Shouse’s visionary gift of land and funds to the federal government in 1966, creating a place where the performing arts and nature could thrive together. Her generous donation led to the creation of what was then called Wolf Trap Farm Park—and is the only national park dedicated to the performing arts. Since 1971, the iconic Filene Center has welcomed nearly 4,000 performances enjoyed by millions. In 1981, The Barns at Wolf Trap opened its doors, offering over 3,000 intimate concerts in its acoustically pleasing setting. And for our youngest fans, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods has presented thousands of performances in its magical outdoor amphitheater designed just for kids and families, since 1971.
